Back in the old days, when people huddled around radios powered by lead-acid batteries to listen to the news followed by their favourite serial, the term “Q-car” (not to be confused with “Z-Cars”, which was a radio drama in its own right) related to an unmarked police car, and especially one with a suped-up engine.
In our October issue we recorded a test session organised in August on behalf of the Department of Conservation in a bid to re-organise its fleet of 4WDs – probably the largest in NZ. The test days were set up by an Auckland company, StratCon Partnership Ltd, and representatives of all the manufacturers concerned were also invited to answer any technical questions.
The nature of 4WD means that the more ground clearance you have, the more varied the ground you can cover. Which is one of the reasons why suspension modifications are usually the first on the list of things to change when you get yourself a new 4WD.
